HIV Theories

In reading about the different theories, I decided to choose the 'Hunter' Theory and the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) theory. In reading them, I think that one of them is definitely plausible, but the other seems a little far fetched.

The 'Hunter' Theory, I believe, is plausible. I think that it is definitely possible that hunters were hunting chimps and possibly cut themselves or ate the meat and infected themselves. Considering how fast HIV cells replicate, I think that theses hunters could have easily infected others they came into contact with. It is very plausible that they brought the disease back with them to wherever they were from and infected whomever they came into contact with.

The OPV Theory, I do not believe, is very plausible. I think that it is a little far fetched that that Chat was grown in kidney cells taken from local chimps infected with SIVcmz. For one thing oral administration would might make it hard for HIV to infect the body since it must be infected directly in the blood. It is also said that HIV already existed before the polio vaccines were ever created.

I think that it would be very helpful to understand how the virus was transmitted to humans because it might help to figure out how to eradicate it. I also think that the more we know about the virus, the better we can control it.

  1. I completely agree! The hunter theory seems much more plausible than the OPV theory because, first of all, SIV is so similar to HIV, and second, the OPV theory has little to no solid evidence to back it up. From the sound of it, OPV was just a new idea that sprung up among all the others, and because it makes some interesting points, it is still "in the running". Hopefully in time we will be able to get to the bottom of all this!

  2. The Hunter Theory is much more feasible. However, you made a comment that the "oral administration would might make it hard for HIV to infect the body since it must be infected directly in the blood" in regards to the OPV where it's not hard at all. As Lisa pointed out in class it can be as easy as the person having gingivitis something that simple is a way for the virus to contact blood. So, it is more feasible to argue that the OPV Theory is not as plausible because it is also said that HIV already existed before the polio vaccines were ever created.

  3. Agreed. I find that the Hunters Theory makes much more sense to try and understand than the OPV. It is hard to try and see how a hunter that might accidently cuts himself while carving the chimps meat would be less likley to get infected than through the OPV. Even though the HIV strands existed for OPV, there were still many more cases existing before polio came into the picture.

  4. I also agree with this! The Hunter Theory is the most plausible out of all the theories we have read about. The OPV theory seems a little out there and plus in the reading it does already state that HIV already existed before the polio vaccines were created.

  5. I agree that the Hunter Theory is the most logical. It seems to have the most evidence behind it. The OPV Theory is pretty crazy, but not as bad as the Conspiracy Theory. HIV has been around for so long and we still don't know where it really started but it would be helpful to know once and for all.
